    Spring is in the air!

    Monday, September 15th, 2008

As we begin the season of “Spring” in Australia, I notice some of the trees in my front garden begin to blossom with beautiful flowers. It is the season for new beginnings, the time of year to shed the slow and often gloomy winter season and transition into a roaring summer season ahead.

At this stage, our bodies also moves into the a state of change. We begin to shed our “winter” coats in our bodies. Do you ever notice that there are a lot of people having “colds or flu” again? Could it be that the lining of our lungs are preparing for the upcoming warmth in the summer ahead? Can it be that the body is intelligent enough to remove the dead cells of our lungs and start to form new cells to prepare for a different climate in the summer (dry and hot) as compared to the winter (wet and cold)? And that a “cold” is just symptoms of your body removing debris and cells that are not longer needed?

Spring signals a season of change, a season of preparation so that we can reap the rewards of the hard labour of the year past. As we head into the first part of SPRING, what are you preparing for this summer? What goals are you striving for? Is it to get more healthier? Have more WELLNESS in your life ? Be more flexible? Have more time off? Spend more time with family?

Whatever your goals or desires, you have time to prepare NOW to reap the rewards! What do you need to get rid of in your life, in your work, or in your to do list before you get achieve your desires or goals? What steps do you need to take to reach your dreams? Who do you need to talk to or consult with or be coached by to get to your desires?

As your health and wellness coach, I would be happy to offer any suggestions or guidance in your journey to achieve greater and more fulfilled life! All you have to do is just ask me how.

    Father’s Day

    Monday, September 8th, 2008

Today was Father’s Day in Australia, and being a new dad of just over 4 weeks – I must say I enjoy this day!  A day just dedicated to us fathers!  I will admit that until I became a father, this day I thought was just another day for all of us to celebrate something.  Another way to make us buy more stuff!  But looking back over my four weeks of being a father – I am glad there is a day just dedicated for all the hard work that we have done during pregnancy and birth… and Ladies, I know what most of you are already thinking – do not worry Mother’s Day is not that far away!  Of course I am just joking about the hard work that us fathers had to go through as compared to the mothers, but today got me thinking… having a day just to celebrate your success is a great way to rejuvenate and remember your accomplishments.  A day like today reminds us of what we have done, the sacrifices, the rewards, and also the lessons we learned to get to where we are.

So in terms of your health, do you celebrate your successes?  I suggest that you should have a day of celebration built into your calender.  Did you lose 5 kg this year, did you finish the City to Surf Race last weekend, are you eating less junk food, did you start drinking more water, are you feeling better this year than last, are you more flexible, more mobile, more energetic, are you getting more sleep … all of these calls for a celebration, a small recognition that you accomplished something, this will ensure that you congratulate yourself for a great job done, AND it will also reenforce your mind and body to continue with the new found success!  So go ahead – Plan your day and celebrate your victories, celebrate your wins!

    Introducing Kaia Rei Tham

    Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

The wait is over! On the 5th August, 2008 at 4:05 pm, we gave birth to our beautiful daughter Kaia Rei Tham (pronounced – Ky ‘ Ya). It means Pure of Spirit. She was born healthy and safely at HOME with our two midwives. She weighted 3.4 Kg / 7.48 lbs and 51.5 cm long. Kaia had her first adjustment in the water within 45 minutes of birth (she had her hand stuck on her head on the way out – putting a bit of stress on her neck!)

Both Karen and I are doing well and are very happy and lucky to have had a great home birth. No intervention, just a natural birth! It is simply amazing to see the power of the body, and what it naturally does, function and create!

I hope you enjoy the video that I have made – it made me a little emotional, so be prepared! (Then again, I am sure it is just my hormones!)

Thanks for everyone’s love and support,

    Laurence and Karen

    Healthy Travelling Tips

    Sunday, March 30th, 2008

I have just spend 2 wonderful weeks travelling in New Zealand over the Easter Break. If you have never travelled to NZ – it is a very beautiful country (I am sure my kiwi clients will all agree!)

As my wife and I have been travelling in a car for the last 2 weeks moving from one hotel to another ( I think it was over 10!) , I remember many of my clients often ask: How do I stay healthy when I travel? So I thought it would be a good idea to share with you how we managed to maintain a healthy lifestyle during this trip.

We continue to use the S.M.A.R.T principles I discussed in recent posts, and here are some of the ways we kept to these priniples (so that we can enjoy our trip with energy rather than feeling sluggish from eating out all the time.)

S – SUPERFOODS: One tip when travelling is to purchase fresh fruits and vegatables from local markets before you head out on your road trips. When you have fresh fruits and vegatables, it is much easier to have these as snacks to munch on during those long drives! Another suggestions is having a mixture of raw nuts such as almond, brazil nuts, walnuts, golgi berries etc.

M – Movement: Moving is quite hard to maintain when you are travelling. One of my tips for movement is to PLAN out regular stops between your road trips. If you know you are going to drive for 3 hours – take 5 minutes to look at the map and plan out 1-2 stops in between your final destination. This way you can have a stretch of your entire body during your breaks. It does not have to be a long stop, just a change in position will help your spine from becoming a problem during your trip. Walking each day will also be a great way to keep you healthy through your trip!

A – Attitude: Holidays are meant to a break from your daily routines! A break from your status quo is a great way for your mind to relax and allow yourself to come up with many creative ideas. On your trip, make sure you do something different, see something different, maybe even try something different to eat, sleep, or travel! On this trip, I heli-hike a glacier for the first time in my life and I soar like a bird on a hand-glider in Queenstown. Both of these activities created an unforgettable experience – and is that not what life is all about? Creating experiences!

R.T. – Reduce Toxins: This can be hard when you are travelling with all those temptations of fudge, chocolates, delicious dinners and lunches! Well, as my wife is pregnant and I do not drink – removing alcohol is of course not a concern… so limiting the amount of creamy, high carbs foods, sugar, desserts, and chocolates during your trip is very important. This will allow you take the pressure off your digestion which is already strained from the lack of home cooked food you miss when you are travelling. Having some foods such as desserts are okay JUST not at every meal!

Hope these helpful tips help on your next travel! I look forward to seeing all of in the next few weeks!
